Some may remember the late Joey Vento making national headlines for the controversial sign that appeared in the window of Geno’s Steaks: “This is America. WHEN ORDERING SPEAK ENGLISH.” Joey, who passed away in 2011 from a heart attack, was well known for his strong political views.
Well, fast-forward to present day, and his famous words are making headlines for another reason: The sign has been removed. Geno Vento, Joey’s only child, took the initiative to change the image of the Passyunk Square-based institution. Why now, you ask?
Geno’s Steaks released a statement on this hot topic of neighborhood conversation.
“While Geno continues to honor his father’s traditions of good quality food, cleanliness, and giving back to the community, he has decided that after 10 years it is time to move on. It’s not about a sign. It’s about what you do and what your mark in life is, and Geno wants to change that mark in life.”
