Scarfo dies

Former Philadelphia mob boss Nicodemo “Little Nicky” Scarfo, who had been serving a 55-year sentence, died over the weekend at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C. Published reports have not listed the exact time or day but include a note from Scarfo’s lawyer, Norris E. Gelman, that said cancer was likely the cause.

Dubbed “Little Nicky” because of his 5-foot-5 frame, the New York-born Scarfo oversaw a violent organized crime reign during the early 1980s, with more than two dozen South Philly and South Jersey-based associates murdered. At the time of his passing, Scarfo, who had initially been stationed at a federal prison in Marion, Ill., was serving the aforementioned sentence following conviction on conspiracy, racketeering, and first-degree murder stemming from his 1980s antics. SPR
