The ballots poured in and the readers have selected their favorites in 40 categories ranging from wings to cannolis and from happy hour to tradition. The votes have been tallied, so here are the best of South Philly in 2011:

March 20 is a date we circled months ago using a permanent red marker. Many of us started counting down the days in December and January when it seemed like only a miracle could save us from sub-freezing temperatures.
The snow, although it wasn’t as bad as last year, seemed to come every other day in small doses. Talk about annoying. I felt like I was staring in a sequel to “Groundhog Day,” waking up every morning watching the newscasters analyze the compactness of the fluffy, white stuff. Please wake me up when winter’s over.
Close enough. This spring, South Philadelphia will be staring under the national spotlight. It starts with the NCAA Division I wrestling championships taking place March 17 to 19 at the Wells Fargo Center. On April 1, the World-Series favorite Philadelphia Phillies welcome the Houston Astros to town. This might be the most-hyped Phillies team of all-time. But will the Five Aces, Phantastic Five, Nightmares on Broad Street or whatever nickname the fans choose live up to all high expectations?
We can’t forget about the men in orange and black who will begin another pursuit of Lord Stanley’s Cup next month. But the Phillies and Flyers aren’t the only winners as this week’s issue features the Review’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Thanks for the hundreds who took the time to vote. This year’s ballot featured a slightly different look with the new sweet tooth section and highlighted some PG-rated adult activities in the form of quizzo (visit www.southphillyreview.com/contests to participate in a special Web-only game, which will begin at noon March 17) and karaoke. Readers also had a chance to recognize South Philadelphia’s top police officer and teacher.
The celebration of winners continues 6 p.m. March 31 at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., where the top-three in each category will be recognized during a special three-hour event. Plus, many of the restaurants are rolling out their award-winning items in what promises to be a fun spring night out. The event is open to the public. Tickets, which are only $5 in advance, can be purchased at the South Philly Review, 12th and Porter streets.
