Blooming business

Starting out as a gift shop with one refrigerator for posies, Ten Pennies Florist has blossomed into the area's favorite place for flowers.

Owners Ann and Jerry Catania have lived by one credo since their 1980 opening: "We would never send anything out that we would not like to receive ourselves," said Ann from her store at 1921 S. Broad St.

Now creating awe-inspiring floral arrangements, Ann would design gift packages before opening up the store. Typically hiding 10 pennies somewhere in the netting, this eventually lent itself to the store's name.

"People will never go broke because they can start out with my 10 pennies," she said.

Over the years, the store's success has stemmed from quality customer service and merchandise, Ann said.

"We have high standards. We treat everyone with respect and we're loyal and honest," said Ann, adding roses are the most popular bud.

But, she adds, don't expect to break the bank to purchase one of her popular pieces.

"The fact of the matter is, we just look expensive," she said.

Petal Pusher Florist placed second, while Cedrone Flowers took third.

Nailing the competition

A newly remodeled facility combined with friendly service has placed Professional Nails, 1811 E. Passyunk Ave., in the winner's circle for favorite nail salon.

"The place is very clean and the customers come in and love it," said Manager Dat Lam. "We have fun with the customers when we're talking" to them.

Though manicures, pedicures and waxings are prominent, Lam said acrylics with tips are most popular.

Clients at the 13-year-old salon include regulars and walk-ins.

"We have a lot of new customers come in after the remodeling," he said, which included soothing music from iPods, as well as new floors. "We're different because we're friendly and we know how to take care of the customer and we do a good job."

Violet Salon, Incognito Salon and Modena's Salon all tied for second.

“John Flower's Accu-Tune is indeed top notch. The absolute best. As honest as they come and consistantly greart work! ”
