Giving them The Business
Since 1987, The Business has been entertaining audiences with an eclectic mix, from ballads to '50s-style rock-and-roll. Performing for businesses and individuals alike, their notoriety and popularity has increased over the years, which is why our readers voted them favorite local band.
"We're very happy we won and very proud of being from South Philly," Dan Vanore, The Business founder, said.
The talented group, which consists of nine men, who each specialize in playing a particular instrument, and one woman that shares lead vocals with Vanore, range in age from 18 to 46.
Although only five original members are left, the intensity of their performance schedule has remained the same - with a spike in the summer.
"We play at weddings, clubs and down on Delaware Avenue in the summertime," Vanore, of Fifth and Queen streets, said.
Fat City Reprise and Mummers String Bands tied for second, while Purple Reign and Rage Band shared third.
Park place to be
Every October, Philadelphians strut down South Broad Street bearing statues and singing songs as they honor Christopher Columbus. The celebration continues after the parade ends at pick for favorite park - Marconi Plaza, located at Broad and Oregon Avenue.
"The Columbus Day Parade is a big tradition," Erin Fitzpatrick of 15th Street and Moyamensing Avenue said. "A lot of families come over and it's nice for the community."
Aside from the annual parade, Marconi Plaza, with its wide-open space, playground area, benches and numerous trees, has become an attraction no matter the season.
According to Fitzpatrick, the warmer weather brings children out for sports, while others walk around, ride bicycles or play fetch with their dogs.
"It's nice to have a place of recreation so close in the neighborhood that's utilized by people of all ages," she said.
The Lakes took second, while Stephen Girard Park came in third.
The great Lakes
For generations, South Philadelphians have affectionately known Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park as "The Lakes." That affection is not only for its bodies of water, but because the once-300 acres of marshland also offers residents sports, such as golf, baseball and tennis.
According to the votes, The Lakes is a twofer taking the titles of best place for a walk/run with or without a pooch.
