The second annual Philly Spring Cleanup left the city sparkling and with a few additions, such as freshly planted trees and new fencing.
"They gave me everything I needed, down to the exact paint colors and number of items," Demais, of Broad and Moore, said. "I asked for six rags and they gave me six rags. No kidding."
He said several of the 23 volunteers who came to help him tackle the 20 blocks from 13th to 15th streets and from Washington to Oregon brought the paintbrushes, gloves and brooms they had been given at last year's cleanup.
"This one volunteer's broom," he said, "it was gnarly. She had been using it all year."
Demais said his crew cleaned newspaper bins and removed stickers, touched up 160 light poles and filled all 100 trash bags, leaving him confident that "at least for now, Broad Street is graffiti-free."
