A man pled guilty to charges related to beating a bicyclist on South Street during a flash mob two years ago.
Stephen Lyde, 23, of West Philly, pled guilty to aggravated assault, conspiracy and riot for which Judge Susan Schulman sentenced him to five to 20 years in prison along with anger management counseling and vocational training Monday, Tasha Jamerson, the District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman said.
Lyde was a part of an eight-man group that attacked a 54-year-old who was biking home from West Philly at 11:30 p.m. May 30. The group pounded him until he was unconscious and stole his wallet and credit cards. The man suffered skull, face and rib fractures, brain trauma and a collapsed lung. He was on life support at Hahnemann University Hospital for almost a week and had to endure rigorous therapy.
Lyde is believed to have been part of a flash mob that congregated on South Street via a social networking site. Other teens vandalized a convenience store at Broad and Christian streets, assaulted a man with his own cane, a cab driver, a couple in a Jeep and a police officer in the same area.

A man wanted for his connection to a string of bank robberies negotiated with officers for four hours before jumping off the Platt Memorial Bridge to certain death Saturday morning. Michael Robert Dixon, 29, of Williamstown, N.J., sped through a red light at 26th Street and Penrose Avenue at about 4:45 a.m. in a 2008 Subaru Outback that was reported stolen in Williamstown June 1, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.
