Donning a “Stay Cool” T-shirt, Mayor Michael Nutter, back row, second from left, helped the 1200 block of Wolf Street celebrate the application of a white cool roof coating during a the RetroFIT Philly “Coolest Block Contest” block party Saturday.
In addition to the roof that is expected to be completed by the end of July, the residents on the block earned a free energy audit along with air sealing and insulation.
“It’s because of Philadelphians like you, who have taken action to save energy that we’ll be able to hand over a healthier, safer community to our children,” Nutter said in a press release.
The block party featured a live band, roof tours and internationally-renowned climate scientist Hashem Akbari, who explained that the roofs will reduce air conditioning costs by 20 percent and permanently lower carbon emissions by 273 tons.
Feed the hungry
SEPTA in partnership with Philabundance will be collecting food donations at 45 locations including Oregon and Pattison Avenue stations through Monday.
SEPTA hopes to surpass the more than nine tons collected last year. However, donations are down 20 percent thus far.
Philabundance is seeking contributions of canned tuna, pasta and beef ravioli as well as creamy peanut butter and jelly in plastic containers.

If Philadelphia plans to actualize its vision of being the greenest city in the nation, it will have to start playing it cool. In an effort to foster some friendly neighborhood competition and hot-wire the local green movement, Mayor Michael Nutter has launched the Coolest Block contest and the prizes going to participants on the winning block are roofs, air-sealing and insulation upgrades that all could lower energy bills in the long run.
