Phoram Patel is not your average fourth-grader.

Phoram, a student at D. Newlin Fell School, 900 Oregon Ave., has been the recipient of an impressive list of awards including first honors, the citizenship award and student of the month.

“Phoram is an outstanding student and a helpful, kind and genuine girl,” fourth-grade teacher Jennie Velykis-Markowicz said. “... Phoram is also one of the sweetest, kind-hearted children I’ve ever taught. She is friendly to everyone she meets and is always willing to lend a helping hand.”

The 10-year-old belongs to the science club and enjoys doing experiments on her own time as well, but there is one subject in particular where Phoram shines, her teacher said.

“Phoram is an excellent reader,” Velykis-Markowicz said. “She is an advanced tester in reading as well as reading above a fourth-grade level. She always volunteers to read aloud to the class, which she does clearly and with expression.”

However, Phoram’s heart belongs to science. The resident of the 700 block of Oregon Avenue aspires to go to college and become a scientist. Her dream is to travel the world while exploring science and conducting experiments.

She hopes to achieve this all with the help of her mother, Nailesh Patel, whom she looks up to as a role model and learns from a lot, especially when it comes to cooking. One of Phorom’s favorite activities is learning the finer points of preparing Indian food. It is clear to those who know her best that Phorom is destined to succeed.

“Phoram truly has a heart of gold. She is deserving of this award and countless more,” Velykis-Markowicz said. She works hard, achieves much and is driven to succeed. I am completely positive that she will.”

Phoram Patel will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 117 or e-mail editor@southphillyreview.com.
