Wilbert Turner III
Wilbert Turner III already has his goals set in place and is not wasting any time working toward achieving them.
The 13-year-old eighth-grader at St. Thomas Aquinas School, 1719 Morris St., shines in all areas of his academics.
“Wilbert is the top student in his class ...,” Joanne Gledhill, his eighth-grade teacher, said. “He is also well-liked and admired by his peers.”
Even though Wilbert excels in school, he is humble and always willing to help others. He could be caught doing anything from helping his peers with their reading to aiding teachers with technology.
The resident of the 2200 block of South 22nd Street is on the honor roll, was a recipient of the Neumann Scholars Award and was accepted to attend the People to People program in Washington, D.C. as a student ambassador.
But Wilbert’s accomplishments don’t end in the classroom. He is involved in a number of extracurricular groups such as the chess club, yearbook committee and varsity basketball team. Wilbert even helps to organize several service projects such as canned-food drives.
Wilbert’s parents have pushed him in the right direction. Wilbert Turner Jr. and Stacey Turner serve as his role models always encouraging him to strive to reach his highest potential even when he feels that he is doing his best.
After completing high school, he will someday like to attend Yale University to study biophysics. Through biophysics, he would like to find a way to end world hunger.
“Once Wilbert puts his mind to something, he completes the task and excels,” Gledhill said. “According to Wilbert, ‘With determination and God, all things are possible.’”
Wilbert Turner III will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 117 or e-mail editor@southphillyreview.com.
