People donated their time to more than 20 events throughout South Philly Monday for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. North Philly’s YouthBuild Charter School students, including Lamar Wilson of South Philly (Photo 1), helped to rehabilitate The Willie G. Williams Mutlipurpose Center, 1016-18 South St. The former fire engine will become the home of Opport-UNITY Inc., a nonprofit offering construction training to ex-offenders and those in addiction recovery (Photos 2, 3 and 4).
Volunteers from Rosemount’s St. Thomas of Villanova and Malvern’s The Vandguard Group Inc. sorted and packaged food donations at Philabundance’s Hunger Relief Center, 3616 S. Galloway St. (Photos 5 and 6)
The Hawthorne Rec Center, 1200 Carpenter St., hosted the Arts Empowerment Project, which fed and entertained seniors. Miss PA Essence Jillian Patricia Pirtie, an 11th and Bainbridge streets resident, led the effort, which featured a children’s choir, at the center (Photos 7 and 8).
