The Philadelphia Mummers Fancy Brigade and the South Philly Review are saving four seats for youngsters ages 8 to 15 at the Jan. 1 Fancy Brigade Finale Family Show. But this isn’t just any seat. Four lucky winners will have a chance to serve as a guest judge during the noon performance at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11th and Arch streets.

Kids, here’s what you have to do: Tell us in 150 words or fewer what your Mummers Parade theme would be and why . The committee of judges will review all of the entries and select the top-four stories that will appear in the Dec. 27 Letters to the Editor section. 

Teachers are welcome to make this a class assignment.

The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Dec. 20. Essays can be mailed, South Philly Review, 12th and Porter streets, Philadelphia, Pa., 19148, e-mailed,, or submitted via the Review’s contest page, Please include contact information for a parent or guardian.

“hello my name is gio and i'm 10 years old and i wanted to say how much new years means to it goes way back my mom-mom dress up in a wench costume and took my uncle when he was one years old and until this day he's been going out and my brother been going out since he was 6 months old and i've been going out since i was mom-mom love years' day and she loved seeing her boys come down 2nd st the look on her face would light 2005 my mom-mom passed away 3 days after her one was in a good mood but me my brother and her son and my uncle put are costumes on new year's day and we strut are way down 2nd st.because we knew that was my mom-mom favorite day to see her boys and it was funny because that was the year are club came in first place and we knew she was very proud and she was with us in this is why new year's is important to me because we do it for my mom-mom in her honor every year...”
