Gas explosion sparks fire

The situation began at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 on the 1800 block of South Bancroft Street, with two workers from Philadelphia Gas Works reaching a residence in response to a gas leak call, company spokeswoman Melanie McCottry said. Detecting gas, they commenced shutting off service to nearby homes yet could not gain entry into two abodes.

Judge DeFino killed in blaze

Having received a 7:15 p.m. call from the 2500 block of South 20th Street, police encountered several Philadelphia Fire Department engines battling a large house fire, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The fire marshal revealed he will release a report to authorities upon his investigation’s conclusion, noting nothing suspicious with regards to the fiery scene. Police learned that one person, who received a transport to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, escaped the compromised abode, Tolliver said, with the other occupant succumbing inside the residence. The medical examiner identified the deceased as Anthony DeFino, who spent 19 years as a Court of Common Pleas judge.
