headline: Casino opponents file federal suit

A group of neighborhood civic associations filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday against the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in an attempt to prevent the development of the Foxwoods and SugarHouse casinos. Citing traffic congestion, pollution and gambling-related crime, among other things, the Society Hill Civic Association, Northern Liberties Neighbors Association, Pennsport Civic Association and Old City Civic Association, along with several individual residents, are attempting to prevent Foxwoods from setting up shop at Columbus Boulevard and Reed Street, as well as SugarHouse in Fishtown.
Alleging multiple violations of the due process clause of the U.S. Constitution, the suit contends the Gaming Board engaged in an unfair and biased process to grant the licenses.
The neighborhood groups are represented by Larry Silver of the Philadelphia-based law firm Langsam, Stevens & Silver LLP.
In their attempt to bring Pennsylvania its 11th casino, investors, including Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider, had hoped for an 11th-hour extension of their Foxwoods Casino Project. On Dec. 16, however, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board voted 6-1 to revoke a 2006 license that cost the investors $50 million and steady provisions of grief.
