A man who shot and wounded three people inside a local convenience store yesterday morning did not get very far, thanks to two Fourth District officers who had been in the market, police said.

The suspect, later identified as Jarrea Gardner, 20, from North Philly, had been arguing with at least one other male inside Wawa, at 1601 Columbus Blvd., at 2:05 a.m. when he pulled a 9 mm gun from a holster in his waistband and fired 10 shots, said Inspector Bill Colarulo of the Police Public Affairs Unit.

Two males from Chester, ages 23 and 24, were struck multiple times and were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition. A 19-year-old male from the 1400 block of South 15th Street was shot in his left foot and was in stable condition at Jefferson.

The officers, whose names police had not released at press time, heard gunfire, then spotted the suspect. Gardner attempted to escape from the store with the gun sticking out of his waistband, police said. When the officers ordered him to stop, he reached for the weapon and aimed it at them, said Colarulo.

One of the officers shot Gardner once in his stomach. The suspect was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition. He faces five counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and related offenses.

No police or Wawa employees were injured in the shooting.

Man slain on the street

A Germantown man died after he was shot once in the head on a Point Breeze street early Friday.

Homicide investigators cited an argument as the motive for the slaying at 27th and Tasker streets, but as of Tuesday they had no suspects, said Officer Sheila Smith of the Police Public Affairs Unit.

Police found Jeffrey Wilson, 20, of the 5600 block of Boyer Street, with a gunshot wound to his head around 12:40 a.m., Smith said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania shortly after 1 a.m.

To report information, call the Homicide Division at 215-686-3334/5.

Teen shot for denying thief

A teenage boy who refused to hand his cash to a mugger last Wednesday was shot once in the ankle, police said.

The culprit approached the victim and his friend, both 17, around 12:30 p.m. on the 2600 block of Sears Street, said Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detective Division.

The friend gave the bandit $75 and was not injured, Chiaro said.
