Gang leader sentenced

An alleged leader of the 27th and Dickinson streets gang was sentenced Monday for a 2007 shooting.

Tyrik Upchurch, 22, of the 1300 block of South 27th Street, pled guilty to aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime and will serve four to 15 years in prison, according to court documents.

Upchurch was convicted of shooting a 27-year-old, who was sitting in the front passenger-side of a car on the 2800 block of Wharton Street, five times in the abdomen and back on Oct. 14, ’07.

His sentence will run concurrently to a five to 10-year sentence that began in ’08 from a guilty verdict for witness intimidation, according to court documents.

That conviction stemmed from a shooting on March 25, ’07 where shots were fired at men in a black truck. However, the bullets struck a 9- and 12-year-old girl in their left arms on the 1400 block of Etting Street.
