What do you get when you mix brains, friendliness and a sense of humor? The answer: Antonio Scarduzio, a second-grader at St. Monica’s School. The 8-year-old of the 2600 block of South 16th Street has his teachers raving about his high level of kindness and smarts.

“Antonio is an all-around good student in all subject areas,” teacher Gina Mulvihill said. “If I had to say, his best subject area is religion because of his high grades, but also because of his strong faith.

“I see Antonio and his family every week at Mass and he is always listening and participating.”

The student, who was named the school’s Peacemaker of the Month last fall for his honesty, always seems to be in a happy mood.

“He always has a smile on his face when he comes to school and keeps smiling all day long,” his teacher said. “Students like Antonio make my job fun and enjoyable.”

Outside of the 16th-and-Porter hall, he enjoys playing soccer, but his new hobby is playing his electric guitar that parents Maria and Vincenzo Scarduzio purchased for him. The youngster said he consider mom his role model because she is so loving and takes such good care of his sister Julianna, as well as dad.

Although it may be a tad too early to start thinking career plans, Antonio said he wants to be a baker as he loves watching his favorite television show — “Cake Boss.”

“He says baking looks like so much fun,” Mulvihill said.

Mix in a strong sense of humor and Antonio has all of the ingredients for a promising future.

“He always sees the silver lining in all he does and makes everything happy and fun,” his teacher said.

Antonio Scarduzio will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 123 or e-mail editor@southphillyreview.com.
