Friendly, helpful, hard working, caring and loving are just a handful of adjectives that have been used to describe 10-year-old Jaclyn Fantom. The student at Epiphany of Our Lord School, 1248 Jackson St., is noted as a student who spreads joy and happiness in the classroom.
“Jaclyn comes to school with a smile everyday,” her teacher Lindsay Avitalle said. “She brings happiness to everyone she meets."
The resident of the 2700 block of South 11th Street excels in all academic endeavors; showing particular alacrity in mathematics. The fifth grader’s attentiveness to her studies is evident in her many awards that include the honors of September student of the month, the “Super Kid” classroom award and numerous Virtue Awards.
“She is truely an excellent student in all that she does,” Avitalle said. “... Jaclyn is a model student.”
Aside from academics, Jaclyn exceeds in her extracurricular activities. Softball and dance are a top priority for this student, with a noteworthy preference to her tap and hip-hop lessons. One of Jaclyn’s favorite activities while at home is playing school, especially her “First in Math” computer game.
Jaclyn hopes to attend college in pursuit of becoming a teacher. She attributes this goal to one of her role models, her sister, who also has dreams of one day being a teacher. Jaclyn accredits her sister as being “caring, loving and a whole lot more.”
This budding educator is confident in all she does with the support of her other role models, her mom and dad.
“My parents are also my role models because they love me no matter what.”
Jaclyn’s characteristics that she most likely learned from her role models includes a positive attitude that extends toward her peers in the classroom.
“She accepts everyone as they are and always offers to share or help students.”

At a school where praise and distinction typically goes to those that excel in music, Noelle McManus also is being recognized for her academic achievements.
At Sacred Heart of Jesus School, 1329 E. Moyamensing Ave., eighth-grader Anthony Nguyen is a model of leadership both in and outside of the classroom. An extremely hard worker, Anthony is the school’s Student Council president and dedicates himself to the Sacred Heart Youth Ministry after school.
At the early age of 10, fourth-grader Jordan Cerone refuses to limit herself to just one talent. The precocious student at St. Monica, 1720 W. Ritner St., applies herself to excelling in every field: Academically, artistically and athletically.
Both in and out of the classroom, 13-year-old Marcquise Kennedy-Best treats others with kindness and courtesy, and it has earned him the respect of his peers. The eighth grader at Norris S. Barratt School, 1599 Wharton St., has a discipline and humility that will surely lead to future successes.
