Calvin Francis is a student who impresses his teachers with more than just good grades. The 10th grader at The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., also impresses his teachers with his critical thinking skills as well as his thirst for knowledge.

“Calvin does very well in geometry and consistently earns an A in this class,” Maria Miyamoto, one of Calvin’s teachers said. “A model mathematics student, Calvin completes all assignments with care and enthusiasm.”

Even though the 16-year-old thrives within the classroom, he continues to excel outside of the classroom as well.

“Outside of the classroom, Francis proves himself to be a young man of true integrity,” Miyamoto said. “He can often be seen assisting others with schoolwork and demonstrating athletic prowess on the basketball team.”

Calvin, of West Philadelphia, has close role models that have clearly had a positive impact on his life thus far. His father, Calvin Francis Sr, works diligently to provide for his family while his mother, Robin Francis, is devoted to her family and pushes Calvin to seize the best opportunities. His uncle, Aubrey Moat, once a talented high school athlete, inspires Calvin to thrive in basketball through practice and devotion.

Calvin harnesses great intellect and clearly shows strength in character. Calvin’s determination and willingness to help others will surely propel him into a bright future as he hopes to obtain a college degree after high school.

“Calvin is an upstanding young man who is the epitome of respect and hard work,” Miyamoto said. “Furthermore, his modesty and humility are striking given his many strengths and accomplishments.”

Calvin Francis will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 117 or e-mail
