Norman Wallace works with members of Southern's robotics club prior to the club's appearance at a national competition.
Norman Wallace, a senior at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., already has a full résumé as he enters the next phase of his life.
Wallace, a North Philadelphia resident, is an active volunteer, a member of several school clubs and a three-sport athlete with an after-school job and passion for computers. This multi-talented 19-year-old would like to major in graphic design or networking in college.
“Norman always volunteers to help others. He gives up his time and talents,” Southern’s business and IT academy coordinator Audrey Nock said. “He is a motivated and patient young man.”
Wallace arrives at school each morning at 6:50 a.m. to help set up the school store, where he volunteers in the receiving area. He then works hard in school and dedicates his time to the robotics club, varsity club and peer mediation program. Wallace is one of two seniors in the robotics club, which competed in the U.S. First Robotic FRC National Championship April 28 to 30 in St. Louis where the team took home three awards including two for best defensive robot.
Wallace identifies Nock as a role model, because “she is a teacher who works very hard and never stops moving.” He also looks up to the school principal, Otis Hackney III, and says that he “is working hard to improve the school.”
After school, he can be found working at GameStop, that is when he’s not practicing for the volleyball, soccer or basketball teams. Norman excels in computer networking and will graduate from high school with a CISCO certificate for his computer work. He also has received perfect attendance, honor roll and sports awards.
Norman Wallace will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 117 or e-mail editor@southphillyreview.com.
