If there were ever such a scholar, 13-year-old Shannon Lawson of William Meredith School, 725 S. Fifth St., ascends as an eidolon of the quintessential student.
“Shannon is an outstanding student with a bright future,” her seventh-grade English teacher Elizabeth Cieri said. “I enjoyed having her in the classroom. She is a well-rounded individual, respectful and outgoing. Shannon is a leader among her peers.”
The now-eighth-grade student does not fall short of achievement in her academic endeavors. Shannon, of the 2000 block of McKean Street, has never waivered from her consecutive appearances on the honor roll from her days of kindergarten to present. Her attentiveness to her studies is evident in her advanced placement in reading and mathematics on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests.
Shannon is a published author, debuting two of her poems in “Celebration of Poets” by Creative Communication. Following her high level of proficiency in her classwork, Shannon was awarded a scholarship to Moore College of Art and Design to attend summer camp.
Aside from academics, Shannon excels in her extracurricular activities. Her perseverance in dance obtained her a spot as a member of the Meredith Dance Ensemble, the school’s choir, drill team, drama club and volleyball team. Cieri herself has had the joyous opportunity of directing Shannon in her school’s productions of “Honk” and “Just So.”
Among her many qualities, Shannon also runs with William Meredith School’s Student Run, successfully completing the Broad Street Run.
Shannon Lawson attributes her success to her role models — Mom and Dad.
“She looks up to them. I feel that because of their support Shannon has gained a lot of wisdom and knowledge,” Cieri said.
Looking to the future, Shannon aspires to attend college in hopes of one day being a pediatrician.
“Shannon is fond of children and enjoys taking care of them,” Cieri said. SPR
Shannon Lawson will receive a $150 savings bond. If you are a teacher or full-time educator and would like to nominate a student (first through 12th grades), call 215-336-2500 ext. 117 or e-mail editor@southphillyreview.com.
