Questionable actions

After I reported this to the proper department, I was told if these men are caught, they will be fined. I responded they will never be caught because the Streets Department employees are too busy going through our trash bags!

Let's hear from anyone out there who has gotten a fine they feel is unfair.

Assistants and awards

To the Editor:

President Barack Obama is not the first "premature" Nobel Peace Prize recipient ("Going overboard," Oct. 22). Back in the 1970s, Henry Kissinger won, yet continued the Vietnam War for quite a number of years afterwards, and Yasser Arafat, who shared the award with his Israeli counterpart, continued his terror organization for about 13 years. He even declined to remove the "destruction of Israel" as part of his PLO manifesto.

The Nobel Peace Prize was given based on "expectations," which seems like a nice idea in theory, but not a good idea in reality. If for no other reason than it opens the recipient to attacks like Ms. Stonerod's.

The Bush wives had their own staff, as did Mrs. Reagan, and all the other first ladies. It has grown over the years; at one time they had no staff at all until Congress voted to provide funds for them.

Frankly, the GOP members of Congress are not big fans of either of the Obamas, yet I have heard not one word of complaint from them.

As good as it gets

To the Editor:

I just read Rick Work's letter ("Get with the program," Oct. 22) and you got my dander up. The conditions you mention, Mr. Work, happen all over.

Report Violation

“Along with Theresa Strati, I too was a victim of an unfounded ticket for having "Recycling in Rubbish" in my trash back in April 2009. Not only do I recycle all of my own goods, I also bring recycling from work and clean my street and 11th street at least 2x a month. I guarantee if you live close to Epiphany Church you have seen me cleaning the street sometime in the past 4 years. I can only speculate how I received a fine. I place my recycling in an old trash bucket labeled "Recycling", since someone stole my bucket a few months after I moved to South Philly, could they have thought this bucket of recycling was trash since it wasn't in a blue bin? Maybe someone walking by did the right thing to dispose of their bottle and threw it away in my trash, yes they should recycle, but keeping the neighborhood clean is priority #1. The most frustrating part of this is that I didn't get the ticket until the middle of September and then they said pay it within 10 days of the date of the letter or else! I didn't even receive the letter until 5 days after it was dated and I mailed it even though I probably should have hand delivered it, as my work is short staffed and I dare not take a lunch break to take care of a personal matter. If anyone knows who we contact to stop this nonsense I would be happy to get a formal meeting going with the right people. Thank you,”

“I am right behind you Bryant, the underhandedness of the Trash Police and the PPA is way out of control. The trash police should send out a notice that they are checking the trash on your block, not come in the middle of the night like the Nazi's. We need to vote these PARASITES out !”

“How do you justify the trash police coming in the middle of the night? With the infraction and fine coming 7 months later, who is to say that the employee wasn't trying to meet a quota or get some brownie points? The Trash Police need more transparency, they are underhanded in their treatment of Philadelphia residents and homeowners and they should stop. The Trash Police oversee our trash, who oversees the trash police?”
