To the Editor:
I would like to commend Joe Vento for speaking up and asking his patrons to speak English ("Meaty argument," June 15). I grew up in South Philly. I remember when my mom, who came from Japan and spoke broken English, told me and my sister to learn English because this is our home now.
If anybody disagrees with this, maybe they should go to another country and not learn the language. I have been to the Far East, Italy and Greece. I had to learn Italian, Japanese and Korean while I was in the Air Force. If I didn't give the effort, I would have been tossed out of the country.
Mr. Vento is not discriminating his patrons; he wants them to learn our great language.

What's on TV
To the Editor:
As I was watching "The Price is Right," I found myself wondering, "Why not make the audience all homeless people?" I mean, America has so much to give away, right? Make all the prizes new homes complete with paid mortgages and furnishings and assign the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team to Project New Orleans. Why not round up a group of homeless people and send them to "Survivor" or "Big Brother"?
Recruit the young "gang-bangers" and "wannabe gangsters" out of jail and send them to the front line in Iraq.
Why is President Bush's cabinet slowly resigning one by one?
Are those earthquakes caused by our forefathers turning in their graves? Is the sound of thunder actually the laughter of the real Native Americans?

Saving history
To the Editor:
Living here in South Philadelphia, the birthplace of liberty, we are on very sacred ground. The proposed building site for a casino, no matter who wants to build it, is on property used by our colonist forefathers to launch their "Privateer Navy" against the British sailing up the Delaware River.
