To the Editor:
We volunteer at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1332 S. Third St., which has many outreach programs and provides food to the needy. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, anyone who is in need may go there and receive what they have to share. On Tuesday, it is fresh fruit and canned goods while Wednesday is meat and more vegetables.
The people who are in charge of this program give up a great deal of their time and we, who are volunteers belonging to the Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church, 916 S. Swanson St., have received many, many blessings for being part of this program. We enjoy this ministry very much.
The organizers have been told that the church will be closing at the end of the year. Another building is needed to hold services and continue with the ministry of feeding the poor and homeless. The building belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and they cannot continue to support this ministry.
After helping out, one leaves this building with gratitude that we met these people who are such caring individuals and want to share this quote: “I was hungry and they gave me food, thirsty and they gave me water. I felt alone and they brought me in.” It’s a quote by which we should all live.
Hopefully, someone will provide a building where all of the good work will continue.
