To the Editor:
Thanks to Joseph Myers for his comprehensive report on the threatened closing of the Edwin M. Stanton School (“Stanton School final days?,” Nov. 10) and why the local community is fighting to keep it open.
Therein lies the reason for Stanton’s success and why it needs to remain open. Stanton is a model of achievement precisely because of a strong partnership between home and school and between school and local businesses. Everyone in the school’s community is invested in the academic progress of its students, and it shows.
Another factor in the school’s success is its high concentration on the creative and performing arts. Art frees the mind of a child to think critically and creatively. Again, engagement by the local arts community is what empowers such programs.
Elsewhere, public schools, with weak parental involvement, and no budget for the arts, struggle to provide a minimal educational opportunity.
Stanton needs to remain open as a model of what a great school should be.

“You don’t take a school that has this kind of data and close it; you replicate it,” parent Temwa Wright said Monday at Edwin M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian St.
