To the Editor:
I read the articles on the public school closings (Mapping the Future series, Jan. 17, 24 and 31). I definitely agree with [Superintendent William R.] Hite. People in Philly are protesting the closings. How many of these people are paying property and City wage taxes? Let them sacrifice like the Catholic school parents are doing. Stop living off the City, and get a job. No more excuses.
I am a 78-year-old senior and have worked all of my life. I am tired of these freeloaders living off me. We owe you nothing — enough is enough. No more free stuff. It is called work ethic.

“I am a single/divorced 67 year old senior raising my grandson who is a junior at a high school in the South Philadelphia. I have worked since I was 17 years old and am still working. I pay property and city wage taxes and all the other taxes. I am not a feeloader. I also went to Catholic School; although back then your church parish paid your tuition and parents struggled to pay for the books, my parents managed and I graduated (and my parents had three children). Of course you know the price of living has changed. Prices go up and salaries eventually go up but never to equal the price of living. If people can't afford private schools it doesn't mean that they are ALL freeloaders and I resent your implication.”
