The pool cleaning got under way Tuesday afternoon at Stinger Square, 32nd and Dickinson streets, in preparation for the hot, summer days ahead. Last year, this space, thanks to budget cuts, was left empty, but thanks to the “Splash and Summer Fund” in mid-June, swimmers young and old will once again flock here seeking relief and relaxation under the sun.
Some communities are up in arms about the closure of their local pools and have spoken out against the budget cuts in the past few weeks. Point Breeze residents held a rally at Chew Playground, 19th Street and Washington Avenue, June 8 with Grays Ferry community members following with one June 16 at Stinger Square, 3200 Reed St. Both of these centers' pools are victims of city budget cuts, leaving them closed for the season.
