The Anderson Monarchs 11-and-under girls' soccer team is all smiles, displaying its Golden Goal Tournament trophy.

A group of female soccer players traveled to Lake George, N.Y., earlier this month and returned with the gold -- or in this case, a three-foot trophy.

The athletes representing the Anderson Monarchs Girls Soccer Club, based at 25th and Jackson streets, won the under-11 Golden Goal Tournament, knocking off squads from the Eastern seaboard. Games were played over five days. The Monarchs also took a 13-and-under squad that finished as the runner-up in its bracket.

Coach Walter Stewart said the strong performance was a "great accomplishment" for the group from Point Breeze.

The Monarchs were formed in 1998 and have grown into a citywide travel program. Last winter, all three of the organization's teams won division titles in the Philadelphia Department of Recreation's top league. The coach read about Golden Goal in a soccer publication and decided to inquire about it for summer 2007. The team enjoyed the experience so much it raised $8,000 to go back this year.

"This group has been exceptional with what they're doing," Stewart said. "It shows they can compete with decent teams up and down the East Coast."

The seven-day excursion also prepared the girls for the upcoming fall season in the Philadelphia Area Girls' Soccer League. This year the Monarchs will place teams in the 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under divisions.

The 21 players who made the trip to Lake George -- some of whom were making a repeat visit -- participated in a parade and stayed under the same roof.

"Living together for a week helped them bond as teammates," Stewart said.

The Monarchs are recruiting for the fall. Anyone interested may contact Walter Stewart at 215-519-9227 or walterstewart159@msn.com.

Rain rushed the Soccer Sisters United Soccer Club off Smith Playground, 2100 S. 24th St., Friday evening, sending 17 sets of talented legs scampering. Securing shelter mattered more than converting kicks for one night, but the nation next year will learn the girls have forged quests with setting and netting literal and figurative goals.
