South Philly Review

Mingling sounds

While jamming near Sixth and Bainbridge streets last Friday, Caleb Hoff beat his soulful bongo while Michael Dane strummed on his guitar. Just as the gray concrete contrasts the brightly colored walls on this block, the two musicians — both new to South Philly — have different styles, but joined together over their passion for music. Soon to start a band called Cork, the two free spirits say they love playing to their own rhythm on the streets of South Philly.

Angelic presence

Vibe 4.jpg

Taking shade from the shining sun, Angel rested in her regular spot in front of Iannello’s Gas Station Monday. She had the good luck of being found by Jim Iannello nine years ago in Marconi Plaza and has since become a fixture at the 15th Street and Oregon Avenue location. Ever since Iannello gave her a home, he said, she’s been treated like a queen. A true neighborhood dog, the store’s regulars know Angel by name — and she’s always around to give a friendly bark.

Just ducky

Vibe 2.jpg
For 10 years, John Morley and wife Martha have been coming to FDR Park. With a picture-perfect blue sky and the trees lush with recent rainfall, May 9 was the first day the couple could get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. While their dog Gizmo finally had the chance to stretch his paws, the Morleys gave dozens of ducks a taste of what the rest of spring will be like. If the warm weather holds, these feathery friends will have lots more to quack about.

Riding in style

The Vibe 3.jpg
Wheeling down the sidewalk on Snyder Avenue may not be the same as rumbling up a rocky trail in mountainous terrain, but that doesn’t matter to Tony, as he sits in his own version of a Cadillac Escalade April 30. Going on a little joy ride through his neighborhood is just as fun, especially now that the warm months entice kids of all ages to venture outdoors and play — or, in Tony’s case, ride.
