Side ways

The Shore might be over the river and through the tolls, but a taste of the sea was never so close. Rogert Kola, left, brings the sun, sand and surf home, where he’ll “chill out” with his wife while steaming up a dozen crabs supplied to him by Timmy Thomas of Phil’s Crabs at 10th Street and Oregon Avenue. Not everyone can break away for the breaking waves, but once in a while a bushel more than suffices.

Strummin' on the ole banjo

Just because he lives in the city doesn’t mean this urban musician can’t play a little country. Sitting on the side of Oregon Avenue, Banjo Bobby plucks some twangy tunes on his banjo and breathes new life into old-world jams on his harmonica. Dallying the sunny days away with folky notes, the resident — now retired — has gained his own audience, as people wave and affectionately honk their horns as they pass by.

A lot of song

The stress of honking horns and traffic jams at the bustling parking lot on Third and Bainbridge streets does not phase Mekonen Melyone, left, and Mike Wolde. The South Philadelphians prepared for what looked like a soon-to-be-very-busy Friday night of South Street visitors by belting out some of their favorite tunes. Singing into the night, the two create their own talent showcase — Queen Village Idol.

Life’s cycle

Shaded by a leafy canopy, surrounded by lush trees and slivers of sunshine, Queen Village’s Mario Lanza Park was the perfect place for Hillary Seith, left, and friend Carrie Leiser-Williams to reunite after not seeing each other for 10 years. The high school friends munched on falafel, caught up on old times and soaked up Tuesday’s glorious weather while Seith’s 11-month-old daughter Juliet snuggled between them. Sigh, how time flies.
